Haven Amsterdam

Transhipment

Amsterdam is one of the most important junctions in Europe for combined water, road, railway and air transport. With annual goods transhipments of 85 million tons, the Amsterdam port plays a crucial role for European business.

Multi-functional port

The Port of Amsterdam has facilities for all types of cargo: dry and liquid bulk, general cargo and containers. Furthermore excellent connections by rail, road en inland waterways connect the port with the hinterland. The Amsterdam port has a unique location. It is a tideless port with a short entry time from the sea. The transit time through the North Sea Canal, including passing through the locks, is generally less than two and a half hours even for large vessels

Amsterdam cargoes

  • Dry bulk
Amsterdam has a very large dry bulk cluster: agricultural bulk, bio mass, coal, sand, gravel and granite are products which are commonly shipped through the Port of Amsterdam in increasing quantities.
  • Liquid bulk
Liquid bulk including oil products, biofuels and special chemicals, are processed further in Amsterdam in a safe and responsible manner.

Container transhipment
Amsterdam is targeting container transhipment as new growth market with the state of the art Amsterdam Container Terminals.

  • General cargo
Various types of general cargo are handled in the Port of Amsterdam such as cars, rolls of steel and paper products.
  • Food
Amsterdam is an important junction for food products, such as fish from the port of IJmuiden, potatoes from the port of Beverwijk, raw materials for the active Dutch food industry and cocoa. Amsterdam is the largest cocoa port in the world.

Intermodal connections

Because of increasing congestion on the roads, transport of goods by water and rail is being encouraged. Ports such as Amsterdam, with their excellent inland waterway (Amsterdam Rhine Canal) and rail connections (Betuweroute), are capable of taking over much of this pressure. The infrastructure of Amsterdam and its port ensure that European markets are easily accessible, often within a few hours.
