The Amsterdam region and 'northern wing' of the western agglomeration are doing well internationally, but could do better according to a study carried out by KPMG among top managers of international groups in the Netherlands.

The study was carried out on behalf of (employers' federations) VNO-NCW-West. Both foreign business managers and senior managers of Dutch companies active internationally were asked about their experiences.

Government policy at municipality, provincial and state levels must become more vigorous and consistent, better coordinated and better focused on promising sectors according to the report. The purpose is to attract more foreign companies and talent.

Another aspect mentioned was the support offered to companies after their settling in the Netherlands was far too little. A third of these companies leaves within five years. They require better guidance in the Netherlands.

Attracting foreign companies to the country is also criticised as the process is messy involving visits by delegations of the state, provinces and municipalities that sometimes compete with each other.

Amsterdam alderman, Lodewijk Asscher endorses the research outcomes. "Amsterdam and the Randstad need to join the Top-5 again." They currently occupy ninth position.

Asscher also wishes to better promote the city and region abroad. For this purpose the city has signed an agreement together with Amstelveen, Almere and Haarlemmermeer to carry out promotion activities as of 2008, based on one plan and one budget.
